With the increase of working remotely, the mobile VPN business has exploded.

Globally, over 480 million mobile VPNs apps were downloaded between 2019 and 2020, as per Top10VPN.

That’s 54% more than the year before. While free services made up 84% of all mobile VPN downloads, we recommend you avoid free VPN apps and instead use a tried-and-true commercial paid VPN whenever possible. That means getting your money’s worth is important.

With the expansion of remote work, the mobile VPN market has expanded at a rapid pace. According to a report by research firm Top10VPN, over 480 million mobile Virtual private network apps were downloaded worldwide in just one year between 2019 and 2020. This is a 54% increase over the previous year. While free services accounted for 84 percent of all mobile VPN downloads, we urge that you avoid free VPN apps whenever possible and instead use a tested commercial premium VPN. That is why it is critical to obtain your money’s worth.

This list is really a subset of our main top VPN list, however, it concentrates solely on VPN clients for individuals looking for mobile internet security for their iPhone or another iOS device. If a service is scored higher, it is because the mobile app experience was better. (You can also look at our suggestions for the best Android VPNs.)

Our selections for such top Apples’ iPhone VPNs are listed below.

You should keep in mind that this list will change over time. We’re still working on a lot of hands-on research and testing, so keep checking back. Here are the best VPNs for the iPhone that we’ve tested so far this year.

Following the acquisition of ExpressVPN to Kape Technologies in September 2021, a business that has previously generated serious privacy issues for us, we are carefully re-evaluating ExpressVPN to determine the implications of its new ownership on customers’ privacy. If and when necessary, we will revise our recommendations and reviews.

Surfshark

A Boosted iPhone VPN, loaded with features

Intuitive app interface, with plenty of power under the hood.

surfshark
surfshark vpn
  • 3,200-plus Servers
  • 65 Locations
  • British Virgin Islands

Surfshark’s iOS VPN app (and Android) has a very easy-to-use interface for first-time users, even though it’s very customizable and powerful as a VPN. It has a four-tab design that hides a lot of privacy tools and connection options, while it shows off a one-click connection button on the app’s home screen.

Surfshark’s multihop connection option, one of its best features, lets you jump your connection through numerous destinations to hide your trail. You can get to it quickly through the app’s main location-selection screen, without having to look through the VPN settings. Surfshark also gets extra points for making its customer support options easy to find, like its help ticket feature and library of user guides.

Surfshark’s network is smaller than some, but the VPN service makes up for it with extra features.

Let’s start with the most important thing it has to offer: unlimited device support. If you want to use Surfshark’s VPN to run your whole home or office, you might not have to bother like how many devices you have on or connected. If you buy the software, it also comes with antimicrobial protection, ad blocking, and tracker blocking, among other things.

Surfshark’s Chrome and Firefox extensions were checked for privacy by a German security firm called Cure 53. The audit was paid for by Surfshark, but Cure 53 did a good job.

There are a lot of apps that work with the VPN service. They work on Macs and PCs, as well as iOS, Android, FireTV, and routers. Surfshark can be set up to work with more devices, such as game consoles, by changing DNS settings. We especially like the feature that allows you to allow certain apps and websites to go through the VPN without you having to do anything. As a business, it can be very important to have this.

Surfshark also has two other special modes for people who want to get around restrictions and hide their online trail more carefully.

Multihop is one of them. When you use Camouflage Mode, your ISP doesn’t know that you use a VPN. And NoBorders Mode “allows [you] to use Surfshark in places where it’s not allowed.”

Take care. Doing any of the three things could be illegal in your country and you could face very harsh punishments if you did. A DNS leak or IP address leak didn’t happen during our tests, and Netflix worked without a hitch.

Like many other VPN providers, Surfshark doesn’t have a one-year plan like many of them. You pay about $60 for a two-year plan that costs about $2.30 a month. Its best deal is for the two-year plan. Each month, you’ll pay $6.49 for a six-month plan, or about $39 for the whole thing at once. Month-to-month plans cost $13. Take advantage of its 30-day free trial to see if this service is right for you.

Best iPhone VPN for speed

  • Simple, fast, operative iOS app
  • 3000 plus servers
  • 160 locations
  • The British Virgin Islands

ExpressVPN is known for being one of the speediest VPNs on the market, and its app for iOS and Android is designed to make connecting quickly and without a lot of fuss.

A single button on its home screen tells you to connect quickly, and the only option that comes with it is a drop-down server location switcher with your fastest nearby city chosen by default.

In the top left corner of your screen is a three-bar icon that looks like a normal three-bar icon. This fastest VPN has other options, like security and privacy tools, account and setting options, and even a support page. Check them out as well. On the ExpressVPN app, there is an IP address checker. There are also two leak testers, a password generator, and a password generator.

Trusted server technology, which ExpressVPN built to make sure there are never any logs of its users’ online activities, is the technology behind the network, the company says. If you want to keep your information private, ExpressVPN has a good track record. The company had a server seized by the government at the time, which proved that their zero-log policy was true. We also like the quality of the VPN’s set-up guides and the information in its FAQ, which is very well-written.

As with the other top-five VPN services we’ve looked at, ExpressVPN comes with a feature called a “kill switch.”

This feature prevents network data from leaking outside of its secure VPN tunnel if the connection to the VPN goes down. ExpressVPN, on the other hand, got extra points from us because it allows you to pay with bitcoin, which isn’t something all of our favorite providers do. This adds an extra layer of privacy to the checkout process. This is the best VPN because it has strong security and the best encryption in the world. Express VPN has servers all over the world that are very fast and give you unlimited bandwidth.

As of 2009, ExpressVPN has been in business. There are fast VPN servers spread across 94 countries, and the company has been around for a long time. A year’s worth of its best plan costs less than $7 a month, and it comes with three months free.

NordVPN

nord vpn

A reliable and secure iPhone VPN

  • Easy to use, trustworthy VPN
  • More than 5200 servers
  • 62 Server locations
  • Panama Country jurisdiction

NordVPN is among the most well-known VPN brands. A large part of that brand familiarity stems from the product’s intuitive design. The Nord VPN iOS app is exactly as simple to use as the desktop client and features a similar design. If you’re new to the app and looking to transition from a desktop to a mobile iOS device such as an iPhone or iPad, there is no learning curve.

As with the desktop client, Nord’s iPhone app opens to a typical blue-scale map with options to select a nation or connect immediately to the fastest server. Nord earns bonus marks for its split-tunnel feature, which enables you to exclude certain apps from your secured VPN connection.

Nord allows for a significant number of simultaneous connections, with six allowed over its network – practically all other providers allow for five or fewer. Additionally, NordVPN offers a dedicated IP option for customers seeking a more robust mobile VPN connection. NordVPN has a kill switch and the ability to connect over Tor. During our tests, we discovered no privacy leaks and discovered that its speeds were consistently fast.

A one-year subscription to the company costs $4.92 per month ($59 billed all at once). While the yearly pricing is cheaper than that of the majority of other competitors, the month-to-month price of $12 is on the high end. However, the VPN provider does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

While NordVPN spent a long period on our list of the best VPNs, we demoted it to the punishment box in October 2019 when reports surfaced that one of its rented servers was hacked in 2018. Following the finding, Nord implemented many security assessments, a bug bounty program, and increased spending on server security.

While we would have wanted Nord to self-disclose the issue much sooner, the fact that the breach was limited in scope and did not involve any user-identifying information served to further confirm that NordVPN does not monitor VPN user activities. As a result, Nord remains a recommended mobile VPN service provider on our list.

The company, on the other hand, gets a lot of praise for its recent jump from 10 to unlimited simultaneous connections. We really appreciated its connection kill switch, which is a must for anyone who wants to stay anonymous while surfing.
